She started over, every time.
Rafaela “Doña Paya” Soza sold sewing machines in Managua through Abonos Suaves—gentle instalments that made ownership possible for more families. Her slogan became part of everyday Nicaraguan language. The expression “al suave” lives on. The earthquake of 1972, war, and political upheaval took her store three times. Each time, she began again.
